The Cover Supervisor Learning Programme is designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the role of a Cover Supervisor and equip them with the practical skills required to excel in this position.

The course combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on activities to simulate real-life classroom scenarios, ensuring participants feel confident and prepared to step into a school environment.

  • Day 2:

    • Introduction to the Cover Supervisor role.
    • Understanding school behaviour policies.

  • Day 3:

    • Behaviour management techniques.
    • Problem-solving in challenging scenarios.

  • Day 4:

    • Advanced classroom management strategies.
    • Conflict resolution and de-escalation strategies.

  • Day 5:

    • CV writing and cover letters
    • Registering with an agency & vetting checks
    • Review of Job Description & common interview questions

Qualification Overview

Participants will acquire the following skills and knowledge:

1. Safeguarding & Prevent
o Learn about basic issues relating to safeguarding that can cause schools to be judged as ‘inadequate’ by inspectors
o Have a comprehensive understanding of Prevent and how it applies to your role

2. Introduction to the Role of Cover Supervisor
o Understand schools’ policies and expectations.
o Professionalism and communication in a school environment.

3. Behaviour Management
o Understand behaviour policies and setting classroom expectations.
o Techniques for maintaining a positive and productive learning environment.

4. Advanced Behaviour Management
o Develop strategies to help students to self-regulate and identifying where these might be implemented across the school day
o Recognising the range of factors which might serve as triggers for challenging behaviour for pupils with SEND, and how these might be avoided
o Understanding how to prevent escalation of challenging behaviour, including modelling and teaching self-regulation of emotions.

5. Employability Skills
o Understand the notion of safer recruitment, including a range of employment checks for schools and agencies
o Understand how to write an effective CV and how to tailor it to the position applied for
o Most common interview questions and interview tips

Funding criteria

This is a Community Learning Programme delivered in partnership with the East Berkshire Community Learning and Skills Service, Slough Borough Council and the RBWM.
This course is available for free for learners who meet the funding eligibility criteria below:

– Resident within the boroughs of Slough or RBWM
– Resident in the UK continuously for 3 years or more (exceptions apply for refugees)
– Have Right to Work in the UK
– Aged 19 years+

• Possess a strong understanding of school protocols and behaviour management strategies.
