Kerry Carpenter’s passion for helping children thrive led her to embark on the Skills Bootcamp for SEN Professionals offered by Educate 2Gether. With significant experience in education and childcare, Kerry was eager to deepen her understanding of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and gain the skills required to make a difference in the lives of learners who need it most.
For Kerry, the Skills Bootcamp was an opportunity to build her knowledge and confidence in working with SEN learners. “I wanted to learn more about Special Educational Needs and understand how to support individuals effectively,” she shared. Her career aspirations included mastering the tools and techniques needed to address a wide range of learning disabilities, aligning perfectly with her goal of becoming a Learning Support Assistant (LSA).
Kerry approached the programme with determination and careful planning. She focused her efforts on classroom learning during the day. This strategic approach allowed her to balance her studies with her responsibilities at home, particularly caring for her young son.
Reflective diaries became a crucial part of Kerry’s learning journey. By documenting her thoughts and progress, she was able to identify areas for improvement and gain a deeper understanding of her own learning needs.
The Skills Bootcamp equipped Kerry with valuable insights into the signs and symptoms of various learning disabilities and strategies for supporting individuals effectively. “I learnt about the different areas and experiences of SEN and how to adapt my approach,” she explained.
These skills found immediate application in her placement at a local special needs school. The practical experience allowed her to implement what she had learnt, from managing dysregulation strategies to fostering an inclusive environment.
The journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Kerry found some criteria challenging, especially the Autism unit, which brought personal difficulties to the forefront. However, with the support of her trainer, Victoria, she was able to prioritise her work and navigate through tough times.
“Victoria helped me concentrate and make the coursework more manageable,” Kerry said, expressing her gratitude for the guidance she received.
Having completed the programme, Kerry feels more confident and prepared to support SEN learners. While she continues her education with a Level 3 Diploma in Supporting Teaching & Learning, the Skills Bootcamp has already made a lasting impact on her professional growth.
Kerry’s dedication and ability to put theory into practice made a strong impression at her placement in a local SEN school. The assistant headteacher was so impressed with her progress and contribution that Kerry was encouraged to apply for an upcoming vacancy at the school—highlighting her growing capabilities and the respect she has earned.
Reflecting on her experience, Kerry praised the knowledge and support provided by her trainer, describing the course as an invaluable stepping stone. “I would recommend the Skills Bootcamp to others,” she said, “but it’s important to prepare and pace yourself to avoid stress.”
Kerry’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and the support of a dedicated learning community. Through hard work, resilience, and a clear vision for her future, Kerry is well on her way to making a meaningful impact to all children with SEN needs.
