Case Study:
Samantha Lawns

Skills Bootcamp for SEN Professionals
December 2024 to March 2025

When Samantha Lawns enrolled on the Skills Bootcamp for SEN in December 2024, she began her learning journey with a clear intention: to build the skills, confidence and knowledge needed to secure meaningful employment in the childcare sector. Just weeks into the programme, Samantha not only achieved her goals—she exceeded them, successfully securing a role as a Teaching Assistant in a nursery shortly after finishing her training.

A Clear Aim and a Strong Sense of Purpose

Samantha joined the programme with a passion for childcare and supporting children with learning disabilities. She was particularly interested in developing her understanding of mental health, first aid, and key safeguarding responsibilities—areas she knew would be essential in her chosen career path. The Skills Bootcamp aligned perfectly with her aspirations, offering structured learning and the opportunity to gain accredited knowledge that employers highly value.

A Supportive Learning Environment

Although Samantha admits she’s “not great at preparing,” she quickly found her stride. The programme’s clear structure, accessible lesson plans and supportive learning environment helped her stay motivated and focused. She speaks highly of her classmates and her “fantastic tutor”, whose guidance played an important role in keeping her engaged.

Samantha’s dedication was evident throughout. She emphasises the importance of loyalty—both to herself and to those investing in her development—which helped her stay committed and consistent in her studies.

Skills Gained and Applied in Real Work Settings

During the Skills Bootcamp, Samantha gained a wide range of skills and knowledge, including:

  • Paediatric First Aid
  • Safeguarding and The Prevent Duty
  • Understanding of SEND and learning disabilities
  • Practical approaches to supporting children’s wellbeing

These skills quickly proved invaluable in her new role. Samantha shares several examples of applying her learning directly in the nursery:

  • She identified three children showing subtle signs of illness—despite not being hot to the touch—and recommended their temperatures be checked. All three were found to have high fevers and were safely sent home.
  • She recognised possible signs of pica in a child, demonstrating her developing awareness of additional needs.

These real‑world applications highlight Samantha’s readiness for work and the immediate impact of her training.

Overcoming Challenges With the Right Support

Like many learners, Samantha faced challenges along the way. After losing several written answers on her laptop, her tutor arranged to meet her in person to help resubmit her work. This support ensured she could continue progressing confidently and without unnecessary setbacks.

Growth, Confidence and Employment Success

Samantha successfully completed the entire programme and was offered a position at the very first workplace she interviewed with—an achievement that gave her a tremendous confidence boost.

She received consistently positive feedback from both tutors and classmates, with many encouraging her to believe in her own abilities. As a mature student, she credits the Skills Bootcamp with helping her grow not only as a learner but as a professional, giving her the skills and confidence to thrive in a childcare environment.

A Positive Impact on Children’s Development

In her new role, Samantha is now using her training to support children’s safety, emotional wellbeing, and cognitive development. Her enhanced understanding of safeguarding and SEND ensures she can provide supportive, nurturing care that contributes to children’s overall development.

Samantha’s Reflections

Samantha describes the programme as effective and well‑structured. She expresses deep gratitude for the education and support she received—and has already recommended Educate2Gether to others.
